The Lagonda Car Company in Staines was founded in 1906 by the American Wilbur Gunn. His solid touring car made a good figure, especially in motorsport. Not only on the then newly built Brooklands track, but also on the long distance trials and rallies.

As W.O. Bentley entered the company as technical director, developing the LG45 luxury model with a newly designed 12 cylinder V engine to compete with Rolls Royce. The V12 was available with a standard factory body designed by Frank Feeley. However, numerous chassis were on customer request by independent body companies dressed. They included Freestone & Webb, Lancefield and Maltby from Folkstone. In 1932, the company was sold to M. Redfern and manufactured special bodies on chassis of various brands (Amstrong Siddley, Morris, Wolsey and Lagonda).

The company Maltby developed already in the 30's an automatic hood mechanism, which was marketed under Maltby Redfern.
